News: Dream Acts Introduced in Senate and House
Dream Acts Introduced in Senate and House On March 6, 2007, Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois introduced the Dream Act in the Senate. Representative Howard Berman has introduced similar legislation, the American Dream Act, in the House. Under the bills, certain undocumented students would be eligible for a six-year conditional permanent resident status upon high school graduation and they could then apply to have the conditional basis of their permanent residence status lifted after completing at least two years of higher education or serving for at least two years in the U.S. military. The Senate bill is co-sponsored by among others, several presidential hopefuls: John McCain, Barack Obama and, likely, Chuck Hagel. I will provide updates on the progress of the two measures.
